Construction on a new transit line between the Lougheed Mall Skytrain station and Coquitlam City Centre is set to begin sometime next year, with completion scheduled for 2009.
Rather than building another Skytrain line, however, Translink has decided to use Light Rail Transit (LRT) instead. Trains will therefore run at street level on a track that is separated from car traffic, and be given the right of way at intersections that they share with cars.
The entire route will stretch 11 kilometres, include a maximum of 10 stations, and take about 20 minutes to ride from end to end.
Up until now, the new transit project has been called the Coquitlam Line, but according to The Tri-City News, residents of Burnaby, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam will have the opportunity to rename it, in the tradition of the Expo and Millenium Skytrain lines.
