In August 2002, the City of Vancouver adopted the Gastown Heritage Management Plan, which includes a five-year capital incentive program, designed to encourage the re-develepment and renovation of heritage buildings in the Gastown area.
Among some of the old stores and warehouses that have already been renovated is the Malkin Building, a former warehouse that was built during the early 1900's, located at 65 Water Street. The Landing (pictured below) at one time served as a supply house for goldrush miners, while the Packing House is a former cold storage warehouse and meat packing plant that once housed Vancouver's first butcher.
Future Gastown developments include 33 Water Street - for which final design plans will be unveiled sometime this fall - the Koret Lofts, located at 55 East Cordova Street, and two of the six MetroLiving renovations, located on Beatty Street, at the edge of Gastown.
The biggest project in the Gastown area, however, is the redevelopment of the old Woodwards building, which many observers believe will have a considerable impact on Gastown, thanks to its mixed use facilities that include a public plaza and "Day and Night Market" (pictured above).
