Up at Whistler, there are three main Olympics venues under construction - the Alpine Centre, the Nordic Centre, and the Sliding Centre.
Located on Whistler Mountain, the Alpine Centre will host downhill skiing, slalom and Super G events. Major development on this site includes the reshaping of established runs, the construction of temporary stands that hold 7,600 spectators, and 'an enhanced resevoir for snowmaking.'
Most of the construction work will be completed by the fall of this year, while the stands will go up in August 2009.
The four Nordic events include the biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping. They'll be held at the Whistler Nordic Centre, which is located in the Callaghan Valley, a short distance outside of Whistler Village.
Construction on the 39 km of trails and other facilities began in 2005, and is expected to be finished by fall of this year. There will also be three separate stadiums with seating for 12,000 people.
And finally, the Whistler Sliding Centre will be home to bobsled, luge and skeleton events.
Construction started here in 2005 as well, and is scheduled to be completed by December 2007, so that Canadian athletes can have the opportunity to practice here over the next two years.
